major New York Jazz

International study programme jazz 'New York comes to Groningen'. Top musicians from New York come to Groningen every week and students spend a semester studying in the Big Apple

Study jazz in Groningen & New York The PCC Master's Programme, "New York Jazz", is based on the connection between the PCC Jazz Department and the New York jazz community. In the first, second and fourth semesters of the program, students study primarily with world class jazz musician/teachers visiting from New York. In addition to ongoing weekly instruction from a world class Dutch faculty, each student receives lessons from our visiting New York jazz faculty. The third semester is a "study abroad" semester, in New York City. All potential students should be prepared to undertake this very important period of study in New York.

major New Audiences and Innovative Practice (NAIP)

This new master route focuses on deepening and broadening the competences of teachers in the field of instrumental and vocal education.

This study offers new insights on the profession of teaching. Teaching musicians are expected to be able to work in a broad range of circumstances; they have to be qualified in educating both individual students, and various groups in various contexts, but they also have to be fine musicians. They have to be team players who are able to participate in team teaching. And they have to be able to adapt to and renew the profession in new circumstances. Besides this they have to be flexible in working with requests from students, the working field and clients.

The developing of the curriculum is a cooperation between Prince Claus Conservatoire and the music educational field. The programme focuses on deepening and broadening the competences of teachers in the field of instrumental and vocal education. The programme is clustered around themes like learning from and teaching different target groups, in different contexts. The research within this route focuses on renewal and foundation of the professional practice and questions which students bring in. Besides this, research will focus on relevant questions that come with renewal of the profession like:

  • what is the potency of the profession
  • what is the value of the profession in terms of renewal and adaption to new circumstances
  • how do we adapt ourselves as teachers to these new circumstances
  • how can teachers develop and improve their role as performer/teacher

major Instrumental Learning and Teaching

This route focuses on deepening and broadening the competences of teachers in the field of instrumental and vocal education.

Music schools are orienting themselves towards new forms of teaching and new target groups, such as after-school care centers, seniors and talent scouting. The professional field is changing and musicians and teachers have to find new ways to carry out their profession. Teaching musicians no longer work within subsidized institutions by rule, but work as professionals on portfolio careers where they combine various tasks.
