In this programme, global and local food security issues are discussed, preparing you for a variety of problems you might have to solve at your future work place.

The world is currently producing twice as much food as it needs, but through a simple lack of proper food distribution channels, 30% of it is being wasted. The rest never makes its way to those who need it most. In addition, an increasing number of large-scale farms produce for the world market, while small-scale farms produce for local markets only. Food sold at these local markets is often the only food accessible to rural populations. As globalisation proceeds and these parallel farming systems need to keep coexisting, the question remains how to keep up the balance between them. For instance, how can agricultural service delivery organisations help subsistence-based farmers safeguard their ability to ensure local food security? With all the external factors including the economy, the environment and current social structures, all organisations need to continuously adjust their structures, policies and programmes to follow suit. In this programme, which has been devised especially for development organisations wishing to improve food security in developing countries, we equip you with the essential skills and competences with which you will be able to make a difference.

Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt

As globalisation proceeds, organisations involved in food-security programmes are having to respond to its effects; increasing numbers of donor agencies now require food security to be integrated within
their programmes and projects. There is therefore a considerable demand for professionals who can define and implement this response. Many NGOs
and public service organisations are currently reassessing their activities, and see one-year staff training programmes as a worthwhile investment.
