Why do people migrate? How do host societies respond to immigrants? Why and when do cultural differences lead to conflicts and misunderstandings? What are the reasons for prejudice and racism and how can these negative reactions be reduced? The two-years Master's programme Migration, Ethnic Relations and Multiculturalism provides you with the knowledge and skills necessary to answer such questions. The programme is aimed at students who are eager to do research and who want to become accomplished researchers to make a real and informed contribution to academic and societal debates.

Waarom aan de UU?

The MERM Research Master's programme is connected to the European Research Center on Migration and Ethnic Relations (ERCOMER) at Utrecht University. ERCOMER has an international reputation of excellence and the staff consist of expert teachers and researchers. ERCOMER is linked to the Interuniversity Centre for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS), and has a record of pioneering interdisciplinary research and teaching in the field of migration, integration, and ethnic relations.
The Master's programme in Migration, Ethnic Relations and Multiculturalism is one of the oldest and most established social science Research Master's programmes in the Netherlands. It has an excellent national and international reputation and receives high rankings in national surveys of both students and experts (professors from other universities) each year. In the Keuzegids Masters 2013, it was rated as one of the best Master's programmes in the Social Sciences (score 79) and was categorised as “Topopleiding 2013” ("Top training 2013").

minor Summerschool or Traineeship

In the elective, you can select a course from another Research Master's, participate in a relevant Summer School, or do a traineeship within a team of researchers in a research institute.

The electives are designed individually for each student with the goal of broadening their expertise in selected fields of migration, ethnic relations, and multiculturalism.

Research training in the field of migration processes, ethnic relations (acculturation, integration and ethnic conflict) and multiculturalism. MSc's are trained in statistical analysis of comparative data in order to test theories and explanations of relevant processes. The MSc prepares for further PhD training in the field of migration, ethnic relations and multiculturalism.
In addition, lecturers will usually hold office-hours or keep an open-door policy. This varies per instructor.
